Munster have suffered a major setback before Saturday’s BKT United Rugby Championship clash with Connacht, after Jack Crowley was ruled out once again with a recurring neural issue in his leg.
The Ireland out-half looked set to make his return after being declared fit and available on Tuesday, but he has since been placed back on the province’s injury list. It is an unwelcome development for Munster and a concern from an Ireland perspective, given the repeated nature of the problem.
Crowley’s latest setback follows a frustrating run of fitness issues that began during the warm-up before Munster’s meeting with Ulster on April 25. He was later withdrawn ahead of the interpro derby against Connacht, before suffering another late issue in the build-up to the home game against the Lions.
Head coach Clayton McMillan acknowledged that the repeated nature of the injury is now a concern, with further checks required to establish the cause.
“Obviously, he’s having to do more testing now to understand what’s at the root of the problem,” McMillan said. “The fact that it’s reoccurring is a little bit of a concern. He would have wanted to come to South Africa, but we can’t risk taking a body that’s perhaps going to malfunction again at the last minute.”
Crowley is one of several key players currently unavailable to Munster, with captain Tadhg Beirne, Jean Kleyn, Michael Milne, Oli Jager, Tom Farrell and Calvin Nash also sidelined.
Five Changes for Connacht Clash
Clayton McMillan has reshuffled his Munster side for the trip to Connacht, making five changes to the team that began the victory over Ulster. Mike Haley, Dan Kelly, Michael Ala’alatoa, Fineen Wycherley and Edwin Edogbo have all been brought into the starting line-up.
Ala’alatoa comes in at tighthead prop for the injured Oli Jager and will pack down alongside Jeremy Loughman and Diarmuid Barron in the front row. With Tadhg Beirne and Jean Kleyn unavailable, Wycherley and Edogbo are named together in the second row.
There is no change in the back row, where Gavin Coombes continues at number eight, with Tom Ahern and John Hodnett either side of him. Hodnett heads into the fixture in strong form after crossing for four tries in the win over Ulster.
Craig Casey will captain the province from scrum-half, partnering JJ Hanrahan, who starts at out-half for the second successive match. Dan Kelly links up with Alex Nankivell in midfield, while Haley returns at full-back. Shane Daly moves across to the right wing, with Andrew Smith retained on the left for a third game in a row.
Alex Kendellen, who scored a hat-trick from the bench last time out, is again named among the replacements. He will reach 100 Munster appearances if he is introduced.
Munster XV: Mike Haley; Shane Daly, Alex Nankivell, Dan Kelly, Andrew Smith; JJ Hanrahan, Craig Casey (capt); Jeremy Loughman, Diarmuid Barron, Michael Ala’alatoa; Edwin Edogbo, Fineen Wycherley; Tom Ahern, John Hodnett, Gavin Coombes.
Replacements: Lee Barron, Josh Wycherley, Conor Bartley, Jack O’Donoghue, Brian Gleeson, Ben O’Donovan, Seán O’Brien, Alex Kendellen.
Connacht Update
Connacht are expected to announce their matchday squad on Friday afternoon. The province have also tied down back row Shamus Hurley-Langton to a new contract.
The 26-year-old New Zealander has become a popular figure at the Sportsground since arriving in 2022, scoring 16 tries across 64 appearances. His new agreement runs until the summer of 2027, by which time he is due to qualify for Ireland under the five-year residency rule.
Munster, meanwhile, know that victory at Dexcom Stadium on Saturday would be enough to secure their place in the URC play-offs.
